*How to Build Your Opt.in List*
       - Lesson -
      Autoresponders
or How a Subscribe Box Works
!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Today's lesson is on Autoresponders - your most important List Building Tool  - so listen up! :-)

*What is an Auto-Responder?

An AutoResponder is basically the e-mail version of a fax on demand that will automatically store the person's information and send a series of messages that are stored in the system. These letters can be set to go out at whatever intervals you select. Everyday or whenever.

When you or someone sends an email to your autoresponder address or you enter a name into the system (your subscribe box) 3 things will happen.

* Your first message will be sent

* You will receive a notice that someone sent a message to your autoresponder.

* The person's name and email address are captured and added to your web based Opt.in list which is part of your autoresponder system.

Once it is set-up; all you have to do is add names and e-mail addresses and load it with 6 or 7 letters in your system, then you will be able to concentrate on building your list. Just be sure and subscribe yourself so you can see how your letters will look when they
are sent.

The AutoResponder is the MOST important tool in building your list.

It keeps your product, service or program in front of the prospect so they won't forget you!

It provides your prospects with more information - studies have shown that people don't buy on the first contact. You have to build up *trust* with your prospect and then they are more willing to consider your offer/product/program.

The fact that they have asked for 'more information' means they are good targeted leads - they are interested in finding out more - and they will probably buy when the time is right.

Your AutoResponder(s) does all this for you automatically.

Because it's so important you need to have a good reliable AutoResponder system. Here's some of the top trusted ones - these have been around for awhile.

http://www.sendfree.com
http://freeautobot.com

I'm going to show you how to set up your system using Simon Grabowski's GetResponse.com - the first one on the list. Of all the AR systems out there - this one is the oldest and still the best.

- I have been using this system for quite some time and highly recommend it.

It is easy to use and FR~EE. Just use this page as a general guideline if you choose one of the other systems listed above - their set-ups are similar to GetResponse.
--------------------------------------
Please Note! - when you sign up with GetResponse,
make sure you sign up as an Associate as
well. Every time someone signing up from
your link turns Pro you will make 30%
commission! Another 10% when those below
you sign up a Pro! All this even as a fr~ee member!
-------------------------------------
OK, c!ick on this link to go to the GetResponse home page:
http://www.linkbrander.com/go/9449

Take some time to look around and read through the GetResponse site and learn about their system, or take the five minute tour. Then, click the button at the top of the home page that says (as of this writing)

"Sign Up For Free".

(You can always upgrade to pro later if you like the system - this will give you
a more professional image i.e. no ads!)

On the next page, fill in your information. Please Note the "SmartResponder Name" is the name you will be advertising (you@GetResponse.com) so choose something that tells your customer about you or your product.

Then click "Submit".

If you get a page that says your name already exists. Just modify or change the name of your AR until you get a name that isn't already in use.

(There are over 300,000 users of this system!) Once you have your name, submit it and you will get the screen that says "Your Autoresponder is almost created!" Go down to the bottom of the page and click the "Click For SmartResponder F~REE" button.

"Congratulations!" page will appear. You might want to take some time to read the GetResponse tutorials - you will see how powerful this system really is - you can sign up for unlimited free ARs through GetResponse, something to keep in mind for your future email campaigns!

N0W go get your sign-up info from the e-mail you received from GetResponse.

C!ick the login link and enter your username & password. You will be taken to your control panel. C!ick on Messages, then on Edit Messages. You are N0W at the heart and soul of your new AR.

What Do I Load Into My Autoresponder?

That's entirely up to you! It all depends on what your goals are? Are you trying to sell a product? Are you trying to build a list? Are you trying to promote your website?

Autoresponders are a great 'means' of introducing yourself or product to future clients. They are perfect for 'breaking the ice' and making 'first contact'.

They can be your "first step" in building a relationship with your subscribers.

With that in mind, it's good to load your AR with some free e-courses related to your site or business.

If your site is about rabbits - offer a free 6-7 day ecourse on how to properly take care of a pet rabbit. You can earn a little extra by recommending different
products, ebooks, etc. on rabbit care!

If you're trying to build a list - you might want to try the AR series in my free eCourse - just place in your own information and programs - then upload them
to your autoresponder.

'How to Build Your List' is often rated by marketers as their *#One problem.* So you will have a ready market with lots of prospects seeking your advice and guidance.

If you don't already have a copy of my eCourse you can download it here:
http://www.optinmagic.net/emailoptinpartii.htm

Now You're Ready to Load Your AR!

With your own 6-7 day AR series that you have written or Ones from the ecourse.

Here's a simple walk-thru if you need it. Most of it's very straight forward.

N0W go back to the ecourse

http://www.optinmagic.net/emailoptinpartii.htm

and click on the 'Welcome Email' letter  from this series - Open it in Notepad or wordpad (Your text editor.) Copy the entire text. Rewrite any part you wish. N0W paste that into your new text file. You N0W  have a copy of the first e-mail in this series.  (You will eventually do this with all the rest  of them or the ones you choose).

On your new notepad document, go to "File then Save As..." at the top. C!ick and save the file giving it a name that is appropriate, such as "Autoresponder (backbone)". Save it where you know you'll find it again.

Then go back through your newly saved file and change as many of the links as you can to your own. Any of the affi!iate programs, software or ebooks that you decided to sell need to be placed in here, replacing my links.

Click Save - so you don't lose your changes. What you should have N0W is an exact copy of the e-mail, except all the links in it are to YOUR sa!es sites! You are N0W well on your way to building your list.

Make your list building 'viral'.

On to the last step.

Copy your newly created file. C!ick on "Edit then Select All" to highlight everything; then click "Edit and  Copy". N0W go back to your Autoresponder and place your cursor in the large textbox labeled "Body". Right c!ick and hit "Paste" to paste your copy into this box. In the textbox above that, labeled "Subject" type in:

How to Build Your Opt.in List#1

This will tell your AR to personalize every message with your prospect's name. Now click "Save".

PLEASE NOTE:

The asterisks "*" were placed here in this copy so the code is not a merged name. When you place it in your AR remove these asterisks. Get more on how this works by reading "Personalizing Your Messages".

Do the same for any of these e-mails that you use. Save it as a text file, change any links you need to change, add your own signature, and copy it to your next textbox at your AutoResponder. The Interval box should already be set to "1" or "2" which means it will go out one or two days after your first message.

Once you have all your letters or e-mails placed in your AutoResponder - you have your automatic system set up. N0W, you have to start directing traffic and visitors to your AutoResponder address to get them started on the same process.

More on that later.

Autoresponders = Automatic Internet Marketing Success
 by: Jane Foster

What if you could send out all the information that your potential customers have requested without checking your email or answering a phone? While this may seem impossible, it is becoming more and more popular among the most successful Internet marketing gurus. This is all due to what is called an autoresponder. An autoresponder is an automatic method of responding to emails sent by existing or potential customers and is an must for any Internet business. Time is money and answering emails personally take a lot of valuable time for both you and the customer. Not only do autorespnders allow you to spend the time elsewhere in your business, but it gives the customer access to the information almost immediately.

Since there are so many different uses for autoresponders, they can be of value to virtually any type of business. Some choose to use the autoresponders to answer frequently asked questions about a product or service. Others use them to provide information about pricing or product information. Autoresponders are also a nice way to welcome new members to a website or group as well as thank them after a visit.

One might ask what would be the advantage of using autoresponders as opposed to simply listing the information on the site. An important feature of autoresponders is that they send you an email notification each time a response is sent out. This allows you to track the success of your promotions as well as have the email addresses of potential customers at your fingertips so that you can easily send out updated and new information to them.

It is of the utmost importance to choose an effective autoresponder. An autoresponder should be as personal as possible and send out follow-ups to potential customers since it has been proven that persistence pays off. It could take up to seven contacts before a final sale is conducted. Generally speaking an advertisement should be short and to the point. However, in this case, the customer has asked to see this specific information and therefore an effective autoresponder should allow you to place as much text on the page as you desire. The autoresponder that you choose should provide automatic updates to customers free of charge.

The autoresponder is one Internet marketing tool that will not cost you an arm and a leg. You can get free autoresponders online from several sources. The automatic responses will be a welcome addition to your marketing strategy and will help to automatically increase traffic to your site all while you do nothing. Be sure that the one you choose includes all the extras that will send you site to the top and your profits through the roof.

How To (Or Not) Write, An Autoresponder Sequence
by Mitch Hopkins

So you’ve finally built a fair sized mailing list, you keep hearing your list is 'golden' but after a dozen messages out to your list you haven't mined any of that 'gold' yet.

So what's the problem, are you doing something wrong? Did you 'miss out' on something? Where is everybody?

Well, it's not as easy as 1-2-3 mail and you are rich as some would claim you'll be. Things just don't work that way. It could be the offers you are making. Is it something that will really help your customer out? Is it 'pie in the sky' that takes a million sales before you see one dollar back? Do you know enough about your offer to make an intelegent write up and make a convincing ad,
or just using the same 'canned' ad as everyone else with the same Subject line?

Paying attention to the above will definately help, but isn't the whole answer to why you can't find any 'gold' in your pocket.

It just may be you have a great product etc., but your messages aren't getting through, and that could be just one of your problems. Here are some things to keep in mind for the next time you contact that great list of yours.

* You have used red flag words like 'free', 'dear friend', 'special
offer', 'make money', 'get rich' and those type of words. These
will catch the attention of the spam filters, and if your message
gets through it most likely will be sent to the bulk folder, away
from your potential customers eyes. Worse yet, your messages
may get reported as spam and the large email services like Gmail,
AOL, Yahoo, MSN and others have banned your email address from
their systems.

That can happen too if you don't keep your list up to date.
Bounced messages and returns for full mail boxes repeatedly sent
to can also get your email address banned. Delete any 'bad' or
any 'not found' email address you get back after each mailing.
Your Autoresponder should be good enough to do that automatically,
but always doublecheck after each mailing.

* Your message gets through and opened but if you waste their time
reading about you talking about your product, using content
descripitions like 'me', 'us', 'I', 'my', 'our' and 'we', well, that won't
go over very well and you won't win your customers confidence at all.
They are going to want to know, immediately, what’s in it for them.
They are not very interested in 'you'. Use the words 'you' and 'yours'
instead as often as possible. Let them know what your offer will do
for 'them', and save the 'me', 'myself' and 'I' for giving examples of
what your product did for you, but include them so they can see how
they will be helped.

* Focus your message by concentrating on one offer at a time. Giving
them numerous offers at once will probably get your message closed,
they will put it on the 'back burner' to read later, only to never return
to it again because they have other unread messages waiting from friends
and your competition. Sticking to one offer will entice more people to
at least look at what you are asking them to more often then by giving
more choices to try and pick from. People are in a hurry for everything
these days. Time means a lot so be short, to the point and keep their
mind on one thing only.

* Give them time and the chance to think over what you offered.
Send a follow up message a day or two later, but don't blast them
with dozens of messages just hours apart. If you have a good offer,
they may need time to think about it, figure out how to utilize it in
their life and even compare other similar choices to yours. They may
have to wait until payday, but if you follow up with new offers,
they’ll just forget about your previous one. If you find a limited or
special offer that time won't allow you to wait send the message on
but add a short reminder of your earlier main offer. Don't make long
drawn out messages either or they may be filtered for the length of
your message.

* You should rewrite advertising messages provided by your affiliate
programs. After they have been seen a couple of times by your
customers, as soon as they open your message, start to read it,
they'll close it. Remember, you probably are not the only one making
offers to that person. So if you added any extra offers they'll not
see them and you've waisted your time. Generic cloned messages
just don’t cut it, so use those prewritten messages as a guide only.
People naturally will resist being sold to, so in order to get their
attention and win their trust, you have to make your messages sound
as if you really know what you are talking about. Which, of course,
you should. Selling an 'unknown' to your customers is much more
difficult if it's 'unknown' by you as well. You don't want to ruin
your reputation by selling something that doesn't really work or
forces them to buy more (upgrade) in order to make it work at all,
or even worse is a scam.

* Don't make your messages difficult for your subscribers to say yes
to your offer. Every extra step they have to make in order to view
and make a purchase is one more reason why they won't. People do
not want to read 20 pages, watch 3 movies then have to get back
with you for details on how to get your offering. Making your message
unclear or difficult for them to understand will also kill your sales.
Write using everyday common terms. Unless you are selling to attorneys,
no one is going to go get their dictionary.

* Your messages are too generic and appear like they are a spam
message sent to the whole world. People do respond better when they
are referred to by their names, not 'Dear Friend'. Your autorepsonder
should have a feature that would allow you to refer to your customers
by the names they have given you or subscribed/signed up with. If it
doesn't, get rid of it. Be sure they can unsubscribe, and use your
real name and contact information. Also make sure to use either your
name or business name in every message you send so they will get to
know who you are and who the message is coming from.

* Don't demand they buy your product, but make your message so as
to present a 'call to action'. Use extra bonuses or special perks. Put
time limits on a reduced price, add a members only section for more
useful tools. Be a little creative without being pushy. Use multiple
purchase options and even alternative payment plans for high priced
items. Let them know you'll work with them, that you'll help where
needed and after a purchase, always follow up to see if all went well.
Any feedback or questions should be answered within a 24 hour period
if at all possible even if it's only to let them know you received their
message.

Your success not only dependends on the number of subscribers you’ll be able to attain. It also dependends on how well you convey your messages.

The 3 Most Important Things You Must Do To Keep Your Opt-in List -

By: Toresa Slater

Having an opt-in list is not just for sending subscribers your promotional newsletters or catalogs. Your opt-in list should be used to build a relationship with each and every person who joins your list, but you must do your part to show respect to those who do decide to subscribe.

As with everything, there are numerous things you need to consider in order to avoid some complications associated with email marketing. While there are so many ways you can get people to subscribe to your list, there are also a few things you must do to avoid those same subscribers from wanting to be removed from your list.

On top of that, you also want to avoid any problems with the law and/or your internet service provider or ISP . There are now quite a few laws and regulations in place that are designed to help protect the privacy of the internet users from spam and unwanted emails. The use of Email in business has become extremely popular because of the low cost and many company's have seized the opportunity by flooding people's email accounts with unwanted promotional mail.

But, with an opt-in list, you don't need to worry about sending unwanted emails because people have chosen to subscribe to your list; they WANT to receive the newsletters and promotional materials from your company. They have consented to being on the list by subscribing themselves.

There are times when an email account has been provided by someone other than the real owner so don't forget to put an unsubscribe link in every email you send to your opt-in list. This will help to avoid any confusion and offer an easy way for your subscribers to opt-out whenever they want.

It is important that you keep your list clean and manageable by using the many tools provided by either your software of choice or the email/autoresponder host (like Aweber) you use for your opt-in list.

Don't worry, the investment you put into your email marketing campaigns is well worth it as you gain a much wider and far more targeted audience that will in turn increase your sales and bring in the profits you are looking for.

So now you need to ensure that both your business and yourself are protected from those potential problems associated with email marketing and stay in the good books with both the law and your ISP . Keep your operation legitimate and clean. Your reputation as a legitimate business person and a legitimate website or blog depends on your being a straight and truthful marketer.

Here are three things you MUST DO to keep your email marketing on track and out of trouble:

1) Take notice of those unsuccessful sends. These are the emails that bounce. Bounced emails, also known as undeliverable messages, are those messages that, for whatever reason, were not successfully received by the intended recipient. There are different reasons why emails bounce. It could be because the server was busy at the time of your send but can still be delivered later. Or it could be due to the recipients inbox being full. And then there are those emails labeled "undeliverable" that are going to bounce no matter what simply because of an invalid or misspelled email address or because an email address was abandoned and erased already.

Manage your list by flagging those accounts that bounce. Erase email addresses from your list so that you have an accurate statistic and record as to how many are actually receiving your mail. You should also check the spellings of the email addresses in your database and watch for things like .con instead of .com or misspelled host names like hotmial instead of hotmail or even those addresses mixing up the @ sign possibly with the ! or #.

Another way to avoid misspelled or incorrect addresses on your list and ensure those that you are adding to your list ACTUALLY subscribed themselves, is to use the Double Opt-in method. This method sends a confirmation link out to anyone who subscribes and will not activate their subscription in your database until they personally have confirmed their email address. Now you will have served two purposes...you have double checked the email address is legitimate and ensured that the person who subscribed truly does want to receive your emails.

2) Always provide "unsubscribe" methods and options on your website and include unsubscribe links in every one of your mailings. When someone on your list sends a request to be unsubscribed, always take it seriously and remove them immediately. (If it's sent personally to my main contact email, I always email them back letting them know they have been unsubscribed then save both theirs and my emails in case of further dispute) . If you don't take them off your list and you keep sending them your emails, you are now sending them spam mail.

When you are reported as a spammer, you and your business can get into a lot of trouble. You can be reported to the authorities and maybe blacklisted by many internet service providers. You will lose a lot of subscribers this way and many more in potential subscribers.

3) Avoid any pornographic or shocking and disturbing content in your newsletters. You can't know who the person reading your email is and what may offend them. Keep your emails clean and family friendly at all times. Controversial issues should also be avoided. If you focus on the nature of your business and stay clear of anything that could potentially be considered harmful or offensive you should avoid any problems.

So, keep these 3 tips in mind when preparing your next email. Build a strong and healthy relationship with your readers, show them the respect they deserve and you'll find yourself growing a very successful opt-in list full of people truly wanting to read your emails and purchase what you have to offer.

How AWeber Ruined My Day
 by: Jack Sinclair

If you have your customer database in autoresponders, be very careful.

I was using AWeber, an autoresponder company, to build my customer list.

I had their opt-in forms on my websites, and all my leads and customers went into their system.

Things were going great - my business was growing, revenues were rising, and everything was looking good.

Then, I attended an Armand Morin seminar, where I learned about co-registration.

Co-registration is where a person is shown a page, and they can choose one or more newsletters or eZines, and subscribe to them all with one click.

It sounded like a great idea, so I signed up, and learned how to import them into AWeber. I had read the terms and conditions carefully, and knew it was prohibited to import purchased leads, or FFA, but didn't see the part where aweber forbid the use of co-registration.

I happily imported my co-registration leads for 3 days, and my list began growing faster than ever before. Many of the new leads signed up for my offers - everything was looking great!

Then, Aweber phoned me. And told me about their co-registration policy. They explained the policy, and then said "we are terminating your account", and they hung up.

Boy, was I devastated. I mean, my entire customer list - gone.

You see, Aweber doesn't allow you to export your customer information, or save it in any way - it all stays on their servers. And when they locked me out, there was no way to get the data.

After nearly having a breakdown, I gathered myself and called Aweber back. I explained my situation, and my need to get access to my customer information.

Justin Premick, the aweber person who answered the phone, was extremely helpful. He explained the policy, and said it was irreversible, nothing could be done. But he could help. He could export all the information I had in the system, and send it to me as downloadable links.

I was saved! Justin and aweber had come through - not in the way I had hoped, but at least they had given me access to everything I had built in the last 3 years.

While I probably will never use aweber again, I did appreciate their willingness to help me out, and give me the information to restart my business again.

And for that, I am extremely thankful.

How To Effectively Use Articles and Auto Responders To Market Your Product or Service
 by: Keith Gloster

Have you ever wondered how you could use your auto-responder along with your articles to somehow "spread the word" about your new website, product or service? If so, this brief article, will teach you exactly how to do just that. In addition, you will also discover the main benefits of writing articles and the basic steps you need to take to market your products and services effectively with articles and auto responders .

Writing articles to market a product or service is an exceptional way to build business. The article has to be profoundly informative, providing the reader with information that is related to a specific subject matter. The article most often includes a hyper link to a web page for additional information. The webpage, of course, is designed to sell a product or service that relates to the subject matter of the article.

These articles are normally submitted to article banks, websites, and online newsletter publishers. This is one of the most effective ways to market a service or product on the Internet, and it can become even more effective when it is associated with the use of an auto responder .

Here's how to do it.

Start by inserting each of your articles into your auto responder . It is important that each article have its very own auto responder address, so you will need an auto responder service that will allow you to do this. Next, make a master directory of your articles, with the auto responder address for each article listed alongside the name. You can even add descriptions of the articles in your master directory if you desire.

Advertising your articles one at a time can take a great deal of time. But advertising one auto responder address; the one for the master list, won't take very much time at all. Just put it in your ezine and on your website. You can even grant other ezine publishers to use this as a free resource for their subscribers!

Whatever you decide to do, don't underestimate the benefits of marketing your products and services with articles and auto responders . Also, by using this technique, your website traffic will begin to increase exponentially due to your relevant content and back-links and your articles will spread like wild fire all over the Internet!

How to Play the Autoresponders Game
 by: Ray Abraham

We marketers exactly know what autoresponder is all about. (In case you don't, you can read a brief introduction to it here: http://1-stop-email-marketing.com. While many gurus are still charging for how to put it into best usage, I'll tell you precisely the same information, for not even a penny!

I think I'll just keep it short so it can be as useful to novices as to the seasoned ones.

1. Publish a newsletter.

The idea is to keep your visitors informed about your products or services, while building your credibilility at the same time. This will also build you a long term relationship with your visitors.

2. Publish an affiliate newsletter.

This is to give them some tips, advice, and techniques they can use to promote your business. Don't forget to inform the current sales you're running and to provide them your best promotional stuff.

3. Sales automation.

Put your best proven ad to your messages. You may set another autoresponder address and put it in your ad. When visitors subscribe to that autoresponder, they'll be exposed to your marketing materials on particular products. Yhis will converts visitors a lot more into customers.

4. Distributing articles.

You can talk about your article when you finish writing it. It is best if you allow them to reprint these kind of articles in their own newsletter. This will bring you some additional traffic and even increase your credibility.

5. Write reviews.

You can write some reviews on other people's products and put each of them in an autoresponder. You can even review your own affiliate programs and patch your affiliate link to it.

6. Offer a product trial.

Give your visitors a sample of your ebook, script, membership, etc. In most cases, people given a taste will end up dying for the whole pie. Just don't forget to follow up and close the sale.

7. Distributing reports.

This way you're telling people in what field you're really good at and how great information you have that is worth their attention. These reports can be short though, as it is quality that you're going to show.

8. Distributing eCourse.

Set some lessons to be distributed in daily basis. Be sure not to put your blatant sales pitch here. Let the quality info you provide do the sales for you.

9. Selling advertising.

Sell some advertising space in you newsletter and promote it via the autoresponder itself.

10. Links of resources.

This contains up to twenty links that you picked up personally for your visitors to put into a good use. Make sure to add a bit of your own ad copy at the top or bottom.

So now you have the ideas of how autoresponders work as a system to bring you some fortune. Play with these ideas and you'll end up with your own creative usage of autoresponders!

                   Capitalize on Your Leads
                            By: John C Vincent

One of the greatest benefits of autoresponders is that you can use it for mailing list management. It's like putting permission marketing on steroids! (and you don't have to worry about the email commissioner ending your
season :-)

In other words, you can use your autoresponder to collect a list of opt-in email addresses for publishing an ezine, delivering e-courses, distributing free ebooks and software, making announcements, or sending out special offers!

Autoresponders allow you to continually promote to an ever- growing base of subscribers that you establish over time. Of course, before starting the process you need to start capturing those emails.

The Internet changes everything when it comes to lead generation! Unlike any other method, email is lightning fast and laser targeted...

With permission marketing and NOT spam (i.e., where people opt in and voluntarily come forward to ask for your information FIRST before you mail them), email is highly targeted!

Your email is highly focused on the interests of the prospect right from the start. And, the more tightly targeted your list is the more profitable it can become.

How to Start “Building” Your List...

Building an opt-in list is done by compiling the names and email addresses (or what ever information you want) of people that have given you permission to email them with information (or products) that is related to what they asked for. People who subscribe to your list not only get an instant reply or a series of follow-ups thereafter, but they can also get newsletter, free gifts, special
announcements and offers… the list truly goes on and on.

Building a quality, "targeted" list of leads is possibly the single most important thing you can do for your business. There’s no argument that a list of highly targeted, highly responsive leads is the best asset you can own. (Yes – you own your list so treat it like an expensive collector’s car that you paid hundreds of thousands for)

The best way to generate repeat visitors to your site is to ask for their email addresses. The easiest way is by offering an opt-in form to some kind of publication, ecourse or viral ebook. If you choose the latter then you will want to make is brandible. Your prospects will pass it along much quicker if they can brand it with their links.

At the very least, you should publish a periodic ezine to inform your list of new product updates, major internet news or website changes. It doesn’t need to be fancy and it certainly shouldn’t be filled with advertisements. By sending out small bits of information and updates you’ll stand a better chance of having
your email read and you’ll keep your subscribers longer.

Which ever option you choose one thing is absolutely certain - you must begin to build your opt-in list right away, and do whatever you can (legally and ethically that is) to collect people's email addresses and their permission to email them... And avoid SPAM at all costs!

Why is avoiding SPAM so important? Realize that the big money in internet marketing (no matter what your niche is) is not in the one-time sale (as it might be with spam – if you manage to even make a sale) but in the lifetime value of a customer. People who buy from you can do so again and again (and many of them will)... especially if you keep them informed, keep them interested and
keep them influenced!

Many of the following techniques may seem patently obvious to you, but they are often overlooked. To attain your best outcome you should try to use them all or as many as you can to build and manage your lists!

Realize that your autoresponder's database may be comprised of numerous types of people. For instance, it may include one or several lists consisting of customers, prospects and subscribers.

1. Customers

Unless your business is entirely new, you likely have a list of
customers right now (if you are not creating a list of customers
you are missing the boat on potential profits). Your customers'
names and email addresses will create the most excellent list you
will ever own. Why? Once they buy from you, their suspicions are
down (providing, that is, they were satisfied with what they bought).
A trust has already been established and a relationship has been
built. Current customers are poised to purchase from you again in
the future.

Never EVER abandon your "profitable" customer base!

You’ve already spent time, money and energy to come by your customers
so when you try to sell to them again those resources (time, money,
energy) are practically nothing… especially the money part. Remember,
your customers have already been acquired, have already purchased
from you and a potentially life-ling relationship is already being
established.

If you don't have the email addresses of your customers, then you
need to start compiling them. First, you should ask all your new
customers' email addresses from this point on. The best way to make
sure that you have your customers in your database from this day
forward is to create a simple product registration page. It will
generally only add about 5 seconds to the purchase process for the
customer but it will practically guarantee you that you will have
their name and “real” email address.

I use Ultimate Affiliate Manager for product, merchant and autoresponder
tasks. The software is fairly easy to install (even if you don’t know
anything about cgi scripts) and extremely user friendly. UAM creates
automatically generates a product registration page and will add the
information to the autoresponder of your choice.

Whatever it takes! And with most autoresponders you can also collect
all types of information, like first names, last names, addresses,
etc, which you can add to your emails!

There is a tremendous amount of power in personalization!

Then start "monetizing" your opt-in list! For instance, make backend
offers, joint venture offers, even endorsed offers (such as with a
product you are an affiliate with) and so on!

2. Prospects

If you’re not doing it already then you should start compiling the
email addresses of "hot" prospects, too. If they want more information,
they're identifying themselves as interested at the very least. These
are emails you definitely want to collect. Those enthusiastic prospects
receive not only an instant reply with the information they asked for
and a series of follow-ups (if you’ve set it up that way).

One important thing to remember is to NEVER let their “hot” button cool
off. Keep them excited, keep them interested, keep them influenced.
Remember, it’s not uncommon for you to have to send several messages
to these prospects since they may not buy from you after the first,
fifth, or even the seventh contact. And the possible reasons are many...
maybe they don’t have the time, or the money… maybe they just got
distracted (remember, your prospects lives are filled with unexpected
events just as yours is). Multiple contacts is one way around this.
Perhaps all you need to do to make a sale to these people is simply
to get your message in front of them at the right time. If they are
not on your list or if you are not following up with them then this
will be impossible.

But these now "warm" prospects might be in a better position to buy
from you in the future, or they may even be interested in something
else you offer. Or they may become great referral sources. In fact,
whether they are interested or not, or they ask for more information
or not, they should also become subscribers to your ezine or “hot
sheet” you send out on a regular basis.

A strategy I’ve used in the past is to send a sequence of emails to
these prospects offering an extra bonus or maybe a special discount.
For instance, I was selling a product for $67.00 a few years ago and
had a great conversion rate from a $20 I offered to my prospect list.
I captured the leads with a limited version of the product I was
selling. The prospects then received a series of follow up emails
over the next 45 days. I added 3 bonuses on emails 4,5 and 6 then
I offered a $10 discount on email #7. On email #8 I gently reminded
the prospect that this was their last chance to purchase the product
with all the bonuses and I then added a $20 discount to the offer.
The conversion rate was over eight percent on that last email alone.

3. Subscribers

In addition to your customers, non-customers and prospects, you can
also start building a list of opt-in subscribers! They can join your
list in return for getting something free. It is highly recommended
by nearly EVERY online marketer that you place a signup box for your
newsletter or ezine on every page of your web site… if you don't,
your visitors who don’t purchase are slipping away and will likely
never return!

Think about it this way. The average conversion rate for a product
under $50 is about 2%. What that means to you is that 98% of your
visitors are leaving without buying. That’s a colossal amount of
potential leads you are just letting slip away.

Suppose, for example, you were on the beach passing out flyers for a
brand new ocean side condominium. And your boss agreed to pay you 10
cents for every flyer you passed out. Would you let 98% of the people
walk by you without trying to give them a flyer? I don’t think so.
Why would you do the same thing on your web site? You wouldn’t if you
knew the repercussions.

There is an easy way to “capture” some of that 98% who are leaving your
web site…

For instance, place a form on your website or an email link pointing to
your autoresponder, offering visitors to subscribe to your mailing list.
In return, offer them something for free. It might be a free report, an
ezine, a special discount, a coupon, a course and so on... Anything free.

Visitors may not buy from you the first time. They may even be targeted,
eager and interested in your offer, but fail to buy because of a lack of
time, lack of money, lack of trust, lack of information or maybe they just
got distracted. What ever the reason they didn’t buy don’t take it personally.
Just try to capture the lead.

You spent all that money and effort in getting them to visit your website in the first place... Why not capitalize on your investment and get the most "mileage" out of your visitors?

If you DON'T try to capture your visitors' emails while they're at your website, you will most likely lose these prospects forever. You want to keep them coming back or stay in touch with them! Once you collect email addresses from your autoresponder, add them to your prospect list and send them updates, news and(obviously) product offers. Your list is a virtual goldmine.
