How Link Pop Affects Your Website's Page Rank

What is Link Pop?

Link popularity, sometimes referred to as "Link Pop," plays a very important role in determining a website's visibility among the top returned search results. Your site's link pop will be determined by the quality, quantity, and relevance of the other websites that link to your page.

What is Page Rank?

"Page Rank," sometimes abbreviated PR, was developed by Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Here is how Google describes the "Page Rank" system:

Page Rank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher Page Rank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines Page Rank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

Page Rank is rated on a scale of PR-0 to PR-10. A site with a ranking of PR-10 is much higher than one rated PR-0. When a site has a high page ranking, there will be more opportunities for search engine users to locate and view the site. Thus, more traffic will be routed to that site because it is viewed by the web community as a valuable resource.

What Does This Mean For You?

In theory, the more "popular" a website is, the higher it's PR will be. Here's a quick recap on how to sustain strong "link pop" and Google PR:

To Improve Your "Link Pop":

" Generate as many one-way, non-reciprocal links as possible. Make sure your link is listed by credible websites ONLY.

" Your "Link Pop" can be improved when the websites that link to yours have a higher Google PR than you do. This is considered a heavily weighted "vote" towards your site. However, do make sure to link to pages with various PR's.

" Create reciprocal links with websites that are relevant to yours. If your website sells cat toys, link to a pet lover's site, and cat-sitting service, etc.

It Doesn't Matter If:

" You provide one-way links to other sites that are relevant to yours. As long as you don't have too many uncategorized links, this will not hurt your site's "Link Pop"; however, it does not directly contribute to improving it.

Tips to Avoid Diminishing Your Site's PR:

" Do not submit your website to "Link Farms" or "Free-For-All" (FFA) directories. Google views these as spam sites and will thus lower your PR.

" Exchanging links with irrelevant websites can lower your PR. ONLY reciprocate links with similar credible sources. Just think: "Is this valuable to my readers?"

" Make sure to vary your links. A reciprocal-link campaign with no non-reciprocals tells Google your site isn't worthy of one-way links.

The bottom line: A strong "Link Pop" and "Page Rank" equals more visitors to your website!

And a great way to increase your websites link popularity is to submit your website to free link directory.

The New Reciprocal Link
 by: Andrew Hansen

Any internet marketer will tell you about the importance of your ‘linking strategy’ in getting your website indexed and ranking highly in the search engines.

In the past reciprocal links were all the rage. People were (and still are) trying to get sites with high rankings to link back to their site to show search engines that their site is of greater importance. To do this they were putting links up on their sites, ie You link to my site and I’ll link to yours. This was a strategy that worked well.

However, it was always hard to find linking partners. Sure there was software to help, you could hire people and spend your own time sending emails but ultimately, sites that are ranked highly don’t usually want to link back to your site because there’s nothing in it for them! And you can always use directories but they usually won’t provide you with a link that is relevant enough in the eyes of the search engines to significantly improve your ranking.

Furthermore the reciprocal linking theory has changed somewhat in the eyes of the search engines in the past few months. We can only speculate as to why but it has occurred that reciprocal links are given less weight in comparison to one way back links from other sites. Perhaps this is because an inbound link will seem more natural if it doesn’t exist only because of a link that you have put up to the linkers site. Anyway we could guess forever but the result is that reciprocal linking is dying.

The big question then is “What do we do instead”?

Get as many one way back links as you can! How do you do that? Well I’m sure that there are many ways but here is one way that I’ve been using successfully.

You’ve probably heard people raving about blogs. These days everyone has one, everyone is making them and everyone who doesn’t, WANTS TO.

Now, there are people who own ‘blog farms’ which are large numbers of blogs in a network that are controlled by a central system. On a small scale what I do is post a link to my site on other peoples blogs, either with a sig file or with a link in my post. Now you probably realise that it’s going to take a long time to make hundreds of posts with your link to hundreds of blogs and you’re right. But there is a faster way!

There are people who run services of blog farms who will give you the ability to post your link to the hundreds of blogs that they own. Do you know what this means? This means you can instantly receive hundreds of backlinks from other (generally high ranking blog) websites, to get indexed in the search engines in record time, improve your sites rankings, and receive a barrage of traffic with almost NO EFFORT!

Doesn’t get much easier than that!

How To Request A Reciprocal Link

On the Internet, various webmasters exchange their links for free to generate link popularity as well as targeted traffic on their sites. This exchange of links is called reciprocal linking and it an important tool for webmasters to gain the targeted traffic on their websites. If you are also serious to build up a strong Internet presence, start making requests for reciprocal links. But if you think you dont know much about reciprocal linking and want to learn how to request a reciprocal link, read this article.

First of all you must understand that you can attain much-desired link popularity with the help of quality reciprocal links. In fact for a long-term Internet presence, a strong reciprocal linking is needed to be built by you. Building reciprocal links is a strategy to be devised carefully. And for the purpose, a number of links and quality of the links has to be good enough to make them search engine friendly.

The search engines are capable of distinguishing between the right links and the useless ones. You cannot fool them by linking to all kind of websites. If you are a travel website, do not link to a baby care website. The link will be considered as useless in this case. Do not send a link request to any such website that is not complimentary to your business. Send the link requests to the targeted links websites only. When you make a reciprocal link with a complimentary business website, indexing of links by both of you will readily benefit both the parties.

To request a reciprocal link, first you have to find out the websites with a good page rank. You can get a list of the websites having good page ranks by making a record of their ranking by major search engines. Type the keyword describing the theme of your website. Press enter and wait for the results to appear. The websites with a good page rank should be your target for the link request. Once you have the list of high ranking websites, you can send the request to them in a humble manner. Post an email containing details of your website. The email should also contain the name of the website owner, URL of the website, the theme of your website and email address of the website owner.

How to request a reciprocal link is necessary to be understood for getting correct reciprocal links. You can easily send a link request to the website by sighting its articles on any ezine. Yes, the articles are a great way for link building on the Internet A number of ezines and forums publish articles that are a good source of reciprocal links.

Another important source to request a reciprocal links is the web directories. You have specialized reciprocal linking websites that are available for reciprocal link building with your website. The directories are able to give you the exact websites as the links are divided under certain categories. If you are owner of a sports website, you can enter a search for other sports websites links on the directory. You will be having a huge variety of websites that are willing to link back to you. Simply add a link on your website and send a link request to the websites mentioned in the directory.

To request a reciprocal link, make sure the website provides relevant information related to your website on its indexed link. If the website does not have a good page rank but has relevant information, you can send a reciprocal link request to that website as well.

The Facts You Should Know About Buying &

Exchanging Links

Here are 8 quick tips on how to generate lots and lots of back-links.

  • Message Board Postings – Find message boards related to your niche.  Make accounts on all of them.  Add a link to your websites in the signatures of your messages.

  • Blog Postings – Find blogs related to your sites theme.  Post informative comments and link back to your website if blog visitors can benefit in context of the discussion.

  • Directory Submissions – Vary the title, and descriptions as much as possible.  Use keywords as link titles, and use keyword rich descriptions.  There are thousands of web directories all over the net.  I've submitted to lots of them.  I used to do it manually typing in all the information over and over, now I use Roboform.  Simply push the button and it fills out the directory submission forms in a few seconds.  Most directories are junk, so I'm going to give you true quality directories that I make priority to submit to.

These directories all have strong page rank and traffic.

  • Link Exchange – This is a very controversial method for helping your search engine placement, but it indeed boosts your SERPS.  (Search Engine Results Pages).  The best way to exchange links is by creating a link directory somewhere on your home-page.  I’d stay away from titling any of the pages “links”, “resources” or “partners”.  Be creative.  Don’t use the typical “site title/description” format when linking to link-partners either.  Try mixing in links to your partners in the body of relevant content; this will give your link pages more value.  No links to other websites should be further than three levels deep.  If you set up your link-exchange directory properly other webmasters will be more apt to exchanging links with you.  There are “must-purchase” software that handle most of the grunt work and helps automate most of the process for you.  I recommend two in particular:

SEO Elite – Some people who know absolutely nothing about SEO have tremendous success with using only this tool.  It is older, and does have its problems.  But if you’re really just getting started, you might want to take a tool like this seriously.  (it is designed to help manage link partners, and helps evaluate your competition).

Arelis – This software creates prettier link-pages than seo elite, but doesn’t have as many features.  The software in general runs much smoother than SEO Elite, but has a steeper learning curve.  If you are cautious about good looking link pages then I’d recommend Arelis over Seo Elite. Download the Free Version of Arelis when you get there.

  • Article Submissions – Create articles with high keyword density, than submit them to the article directories Google love.  You’ll be surprised (if the content is good) how many websites will pick up your articles.  Make sure to have links to home and internal pages in the article.  I will go into great detail about article marketing, and its impact on SEO.  In fact I wrote a whole lesson dedicated specifically to submitting articles.  You’ll find that next.

  • Write Testimonials & Reviews – Write testimonials about your web host, web designer, marketer, etc.  Most people will add your review to their site with a hyper link back to yours.

  • Offer Content For Links – Find relevant non-competing websites using search engines.  Than write content and email the content to the webmaster in exchange for a hyper-link back to your site.  This works extremely well.

  • Rent Links From Other Webmasters - This one is pretty easy.  I’d stay away from popular link brokers, and just try to email website owners personally.  Compliment their websites and simply ask them to link to you for 90 days or so; work out a paypal transaction fee that sounds reasonable to both of you.  I was able to get some really big sites to link to me for $10-$20.00 over 3 months.  This method is really effective.  Make sure to use the “link valuing” methods I talked about earlier in this lesson, so you know exactly what pages to request links from.

General Rules to Follow When Doing Any Link Building

  • Do not link to link farms:
Link farms are websites that are nothing but links to other websites.  Stay far away from them.

  • Build links gradually:
Any type of dramatic increase in the amount of links linking to any of your pages will set off Google warning flags.  Depending on whether or not trustworthy sources are linking to you, or how long your sites been around, Google might put you in a temporary Sandbox.  Meaning your site will not compete for the keywords you’re targeting (in Google) for an indefinite amount of time.

So again, build links gradually.  I like to set daily goals.  The more competitive a keyword the higher I set my daily goal for.  It is impossible to completely control how many back-links you generate, but be cautious of how aggressive you’re being in any given day.
  • Stay away from automated link scripts:
Do not use automated link-exchange scripts.  Most of them leave foot-prints.  I explained what a footprint was in an earlier lesson.  This can be a complete waste of time and money.  Link exchanging is still a valuable way of obtaining links.  Just make sure to do it manually and properly.

  • Mix up Anchor Text:
Do not use the same “primary keyword” in all links linking back to your website.  This is obvious manipulation of search engine algorithms.  Search engines can pick up on this very easily; your links will be deducted in value accordingly.  Vary the anchor text pointing to your website.  If your site sells magazine subscriptions and your primary keyword is “magazine subscriptions” and you are running a link building campaign for that keyword, the incoming anchor text should look something like this:

Full URL (http://www.sitename.com)
Magazines
Magazine subscription
Magazine subscriptions
Cheap magazine subscriptions
Subscriptions
Magazine
Cheap subscription
Cheap magazines

  • Be Cautious When Purchasing Link Building Services:
You’ll run into devious people who can care less about your website.  These people selling you services who will generate thousands of back-links to your domains in a few days or even hours are crooks.  They are using industry hype and trying to take advantage of novice search engine marketers.  Don’t be one of them.

  • Vary the Destination of Your Back-Links One day generate back-links for your home page only. The next day generate back-links for your internal pages. Mix it up.  It looks much more natural when back-links are pointing everywhere in your website and not just piling up on the homepage.

I dropped a lot of information on you.  Obtaining back-links is without question the most important part of any SEO campaign.  Mix and match a lot of the strategies listed above, and I guarantee you success (even in the most competitive markets).

Improve the Link Popularity of your site
By Sumantra Roy

Link popularity, i.e. the number of sites which are linking to your site, is an increasingly important factor as far as search engine placement is concerned. Other things remaining the same, more the number of links to your site, higher will be its ranking.

What is important is not only the number of links to your site, but also the types of sites which are linking to you. A link from a site which is related to yours is more valuable than a link from an unrelated site.

In this article, I explore different methods by which you can improve the link popularity of your site. I start with a method that you shouldn't bother using, then go on to the moderately effective methods, and then end with the most effective methods you can use to boost the link popularity of your site.

1) Submitting your site to Free For All (FFA) pages

A common misconception among many Internet marketers is that while FFA pages may not directly bring in traffic to your site, it will help to improve the link popularity of your site, and hence, will indirectly bring in traffic through the search engines.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Most FFA pages can contain only a certain number of links at a time. This means that when you submit your site to a FFA page, your site will be placed at the top of the page. However, as more and more people submit their sites to the FFA page, your site will be pushed down, and finally, when it reaches the bottom of the page, it will be removed.

Now, since you can bet that plenty of other people are also submitting their sites to the FFA pages, your site will remain in these pages for only a short span of time. Hence, in order to ensure that the search engines see your site if and when they come to spider the FFA page, you will need to ensure that you submit your site to these FFA pages on a regular basis - at least once a week.

Even if you used an automatic submission program to do it, can you imagine a worse way to spend your time and/or money? Furthermore, many search engines recognize these pages which only contains links to other sites as FFA pages and may completely ignore them. And while I haven't yet seen any evidence that submitting to the FFA pages will actually penalize your site, there is every possibility that this might happen in the future.

Hence, when it comes to FFA pages, my advice is simple: don't even think about them.

2) Starting an Awards Program

A moderately effective method of improving the link popularity of your site is to start an awards program. You can have web sites which are related to yours apply for an award from your site. The sites which win the award get the chance to display the logo for your award. This logo is linked to your site, preferably to a page which contains more information on the award.

If you publish a newsletter, consider declaring the winners in your newsletter. You can also perform a review of the winners' sites in your newsletter. This adds useful content to your newsletter and also gives more webmasters the incentive to apply for your award, since you may review their sites in your newsletter. This also gives them the incentive to subscribe to your newsletter to see if they win the award.

Make sure that you give awards to only those sites which deserve to win. If you give your award to sites which don't deserve it, your award will have little credibility, which will, in turn, hurt the credibility of your company. Furthermore, make sure that the logo you design for the award looks professional. If it doesn't, not many webmasters will want to display it in their sites.

3) Giving testimonials

This may sound a bit unusual, but giving testimonials for products or services which you find useful can be another moderately effective way of improving the link popularity of your site. If you really like a product, simply write to the company and tell them why you liked the product so much and how it has helped you. Chances are, the company will write back to you to thank you for your comments and will ask you for permission to display your comments in their web site. Tell the company that you have no problems if they publish your comments, but request them to add a link to your site along with the testimonial. There is every possibility that the company will agree since publishing the URL of your web site gives more credibility to the testimonial.

Of course, please don't go about giving testimonials to every company you can locate just because it will improve your link popularity :-)

4) Posting to Message Boards and Discussion Lists

Another moderately effective method of increasing the link popularity of your site is to post to online message boards. At the end of every message that you post, you can sign off by mentioning your name and the URL of your web site. If the message board allows it, you can even include a short promotional blurb about your site at the end of your posts. However, make sure that the individual messages that are posted to that message board are archived in static HTML pages (i.e. the URLs for the individual messages should not contain a "?"). Otherwise, the search engines will consider these pages to be dynamic pages and may not spider these pages and hence, will not be able to find your link.

Email based discussion lists which are archived on the web in static HTML pages can also be used to boost the link popularity of your site in a similar manner. In this case, the signature file that you use with your email program should contain the URL for your web site.

5) Starting a Link Contest

A good method of improving the link popularity of your site is to give away prizes to other webmasters if they link to you. The prizes that you give out should ideally be something which other webmasters will find valuable enough to want to link to you, but which do not cost you too much. For instance, if you publish a newsletter, and have unsold ad inventory, you can give away some free advertisements in your newsletter to the winners. If you sell a software (or an ebook), you can give away a free copy of your software or ebook to the winners, since it doesn't cost you anything to produce an additional copy of digital goods like software and ebooks.

Link contests work best if you run the contest on a continuous basis and if you declare new winners frequently. If you run the contest for a few months, and then stop it, the webmasters who had linked to you will all remove their links. However, if you run it on a continuous basis, and declare new winners every month or so, the webmasters will have the incentive to keep their links to your site.

Also, make sure that you require all participants to have a link to your site either in their home page, or in an internal page of their site which is linked to their home page. Also ensure that the page which contains the link is no more than two levels deep from their home page (i.e. it should not take more than two clicks to go from the home page to the page containing the link). If they don't do this, the search engine spiders may not index the page which contains the link to your site, and hence, may not find your link.

6) Writing articles and allowing them to be re-published

This is an excellent method of improving the link popularity of your site. Whenever I write an article on search engine placement, I first publish it in my newsletter and then I publish the article in my site as a separate web page. I also submit it to the following article submission sites:

http://www.ezinearticles.com/add_url.html
http://www.ideamarketers.com
http://www.marketing-seek.com/articles/submit.shtml
http://certificate.net/wwio/ideas.shtml
http://www.web-source.net/articlesub.htm

Many webmasters and ezine publishers frequent these article directories in search of articles. Submitting my articles to these directories gives them the opportunity of re-publishing my articles. While I have had some success with each of the above directories, by far the best among them is the ezinearticles.com directory.

Now, at the end of each article, I mention that people are free to re-publish the article as long as they include my resource box (i.e. my bio) at the end of the article. I always include the URL of my site in the resource box. This means that whenever someone publishes one of my articles in his/her web site, I have another site linking to my site. Also, many ezine publishers archive their ezines in their web sites. If they have re-published my article in a particular issue, I again get a link.

Writing articles is also an excellent viral marketing tool. As some webmasters and ezine publishers publish my articles, other webmasters and ezine publishers will read my article. Some of them, in turn, will publish my article, which will again be read by other webmasters and ezine publishers, some of whom will publish it... and so on.

Also, since only web sites related to mine would be interested in publishing my articles, all these links tend to come from related sites, which, as I mentioned earlier, are more valuable than links from unrelated sites.

Writing articles, of course, has another very important benefit - if you write good articles, it makes you known as an expert in your field. This helps to improve your credibility, which makes people more comfortable about buying your products or services.

Some notes about writing articles:

i) I have learnt through experience that some webmasters will publish other people's articles and will display the complete resource box but will not link to the URL mentioned in the resource box. In order to prevent this, you need to explicitly state that the article can be published only if the URL mentioned in the resource box is linked to your site.

ii) Your resource box should not be too long - it should be no more than 6 lines long, formatted at 65 characters per line. Otherwise, other webmasters and ezine publishers will hesitate to publish your article.

7) Submitting to the directories

This is by far the most important step as far as improving the link popularity of your site is concerned. As I mentioned before, what is important is not only the number of links to your site, but also the quality of the links to your site. No links are as important as links from some of the major directories like Yahoo!, the Open Directory etc. However, Yahoo! currently requires a payment of $299 per year in order to list any commercial site. Paying them $299 per year just to improve your link popularity is probably not cost effective. But, the Open Directory is free, and you should definitely get your site listed in the Open Directory.

Also, you should submit your site to as many of the smaller directories as possible. You can get a list of such directories here.

8) Exchanging links with other webmasters

The single-most effective way of improving the link popularity of your site is to exchange links with other webmasters who have sites which are related to yours, but are not direct competitors. This is called reciprocal linking.

However, the problem with this method is the sheer amount of time it takes if you were to do it manually.

If you decide to do this manually, you can easily expect to spend hundreds of hours on this activity alone.

Here's what you need to do:

i) You need to use the search engines to find sites related to yours that are not direct competitors by typing in some keywords that are related to your site.

ii) You also need to find sites that link to your competitors.

iii) You need to visit these sites and see if they actually exchange links.

iv) If you decide that you want to exchange links with a particular site, you need to find out exactly how it wants you to link to it from your site.

v) You then need to manually add a link to this site in your site.

vi) Then, you need to find out the email address of the owner of the website and send the owner a personalized email requesting that he/she adds a link to your site in return.

vii) In many cases, you will not be able to locate the email address of the owner simply because the owner has not published any email address on the site. In that case, all the effort that you had put into evaluating whether or not the site is suitable for exchanging links will have been a waste of time.

viii) If you do manage to locate the email address, you need to send a personalized and customized email to the website owner.

ix) You then need to wait and see whether this site is willing to exchange links with you.

x) If the site is not willing to link to you, you need to remove the link to the site from your site. Once again, all the effort that you had put into evaluating the site, linking to it and sending an email to the owner will have been a waste of time.

You have to repeat the same process all over again for the next site that you want to exchange links with.

Obviously, there has to be a better way. And there is!

Luckily for you, I have developed a ground-breaking new software called LinkExplore that completely automates the entire process of exchanging links with other website owners, thus saving you hundreds of hours of your time.

I had originally developed the software for my own needs but later decided to make it available to other website owners as well.
